M. Fatih Çalışır: 'IHU Aims at Assuming the Lead in the Arena of Summer Schools'
The IHU Summer Schools will continue this year by enriching its scope and opportunities with the participation of students from all over the world. We interviewed Dr. M. Fatih Çalışır, the coordinator of IHU Summer Schools, regarding the activities held in the context of the summer school programs.

The Summer Schools, organized by Ibn Haldun University since its establishment, will continue this year by enriching its scope and opportunities with the participation of students from all over the world. In addition to the Summer School Languages Program organized every year, Environmental History and Islamic Sciences summer school programs will be added to the agenda of the summer school for this year.

We interviewed Assist. Prof. M. Fatih Çalışır, the faculty member of History Department and the coordinator of IHU Summer Schools, regarding the activities held in the context of the summer school since 2017 and the collaboration with Penn State University, one of the well-established educational institutions of the USA.

Assist. Prof. Çalışır, first of all, can you give a brief information about the "summer school" applications in higher education that students from different universities can benefit from? Why are these programs organized, and what kind of opportunities are provided to students in these programs?

Summer school "Summer Semester", with its broadest definition, is a shortened and intensified training program prepared for students who cannot take the classes they should take in the Fall and Spring semesters, who fail their courses, who want to enroll in upper year’s classes in order to graduate early, or who do a double major or minor program. In the fall and spring semesters, courses and exams are completed in 14 weeks, while the summer semester lasts for 7 weeks. Although the number of weeks decreases, students who take courses in summer school do not experience any loss in terms of education. They complete their courses and exams in accordance with the curriculum in the fall and spring semesters.

Another advantage of the summer school is that they can take courses from different universities and have these courses counted at the universities they are registered to. With these aspects, the summer school is a flexible and academically beneficial program that saves time for students.

“All the facilities of the university are at the service of Summer School Students”

Various leading universities in Turkey offer summer school programs in various fields. What are the privileges offered by Ibn Haldun University at this point?

Yes, various universities in Turkey have been organizing summer school programs under various names for a long time. However, Ibn Haldun University has the goal of assuming the lead in this field. Students who will enroll in the summer school will not only benefit from all the facilities of Ibn Haldun University, especially the library, dormitories, sports center and cafeteria, but also will have the opportunity to enroll in classes taught by distinguished academics of the university. The excursions of Istanbul city and the presentations delivered by expert academics will ensure that the participants receive the maximum benefit of this experience.

Lastly, do you want to tell anything else about the IHU Summer School?

I would recommend the programs offered within the IHU Summer School to everyone, and thank you for giving me this opportunity.
