On the seventh anniversary, the sociological dimensions and background of the treacherous coup attempt of 15 July were discussed with sociologist Bayram Erdem under the negotiation of Ibn Haldun University Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Dean Prof. Dr. Alev Erkilet. Erdem, who has conducted research on coups and coup attempts in our geography from the Ottoman Empire to the present day, made remarkable observations about the 15 July treacherous coup attempt and the impact of the media on the process.
After the opening speech of Başakşehir District Governor Ugur Turan, our Rector Prof. Dr. Atilla Arkan welcomed the participants and mentioned that 15 July is an important social event for today's youth, which they will realise that it is one of the most important breaking points in the history of the Republic of Turkey when they look back years later.
Stating that the effect of media tools on the prevention of the coup attempt cannot be denied, Bayram Erdem mentioned that approximately 43-44% of the people who took to the streets after receiving the news of the coup attempt took action after listening to Erdoğan's statement on a television channel.
Erdem mentioned that the action of the people taking to the streets after the coup attempt evolved from a defensive and protective process to a state and nation-oriented theme, and said that he observed that the words of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in his call broadcast on a television network had a great impact on this.
Saying that he worked with 130 different 15 July veterans and witnesses, Bayram Erdem stated that they paid attention to factors such as the education, marital status, income level and the segment of the society they came from. On the night of 15 July, the majority of those who were on the streets and participated in Erdem's research heard the news through television, while social media ranked second. In addition to the rest of the participants who heard about the treacherous attempt from their acquaintances, it was added that two people were informed about it through radio channels.
Erdem concluded his speech by stating that the spirit behind the takbirs and the emphasis on the indivisibility of the homeland, which the people who took to the squares often used as slogans, is so valuable that it cannot be replaced when it is lost.
