Ibn Haldun University (IHU) holds the III. International Süleymaniye Symposium on 24-26 September with the theme of "Köprülü Era in Ottoman History (1656-1710): New Sources, New Approaches."
The symposium was organized in collaboration with the Institute for Habsburg and Balkan Studies (ihb) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. All sessions of the symposium held in the Salis Madrasa of Süleymaniye Campus were broadcast live on IHU’s YouTube official account: (https://www.youtube.com/ibnhalduni). In the program, where respected scientists from Turkey and abroad presented their papers, some participants delivered their presentations via Zoom online meeting application.
The opening program of the symposium, which was held on Friday, September 24, witnessed the speeches of each of the President of IHU Prof. Atilla Arkan, Head of the History Department Prof. Halil Berktay, Assist. Prof. M. Fatih Çalışır from History Department and Dr. Yasir Yılmaz from Austria Academy of Sciences.
After the opening speeches, the symposium continued with a roundtable meeting with the participation of Suraiya Faroqhi, İhsan Fazlıoğlu, Rhoads Murphey, Abdülkadir Özcan and Kahraman Şakul under the chairmanship of Halil Berktay.
The 2nd session chaired by İhsan Fazlıoğlu was held under the title of "Köprülü Library and Fazıl Ahmed Pasha Collection." In the session, presentations were delivered with the titles, “What Changed in Two Centuries? Comparison Between Collections of Mahmud Paşa, Habeşi Mehmet Ağa and Fazıl Ahmed Paşa,” by Berat Açıl, “Rejection as a Tanzim Form in Manuscripts: A Sample of the Fazıl Ahmed Paşa’s Collection” by Nimet İpek and Gülsüm Gülsev Şanver, “Appropriation Records of Köprülü Library” by Tufan Kara and “General Evaluations of Literary Works in Köprülü Library” by Sadık Yazar.
In the third session, where Sadık Yazar was the moderator of the session, papers were presented on the subjects of "Ottoman Patronage Networks in the Köprülü Era.” In this session, Metin Aydar delivered a presentation titled “Who Refuge to Âsitâne-i Devlet Will Not Be Harmed: Patronage Beyond the Ottoman Borders in the Köprülü Era,” Hatice Arslan Sözü Doğru delivered her speech on the theme "The First 15 Years of the Köprülü Era with the Observations of an Ottoman Historian: Mehmed Pasha, Fâzıl Ahmed Pasha and Their Relationship with their Bridegroom Merzifonlu Kara Mustafa Pasha" and Özgün Deniz Yoldaşlar talked about "Minḳārîzâde Asitane: The Patronage Network of the Ulema of the Köprülü Era.”
Abdulkadir Özcan moderated the fourth session held around the title of “Historiography and New Sources” on Saturday, September 25. In the session, Ramazan Aktemur delivered a speech on “A Contemporary Source About the Köprülü: Anonymous Ottoman Document (H.1058-1106 / M.1648-1694)” Yunus Aktı held his speech on “The Patronage of Ottoman Historiography in the Koprülü Era,” Cumhur Bekar delivered his presentation on “The Rupture and the Continuity: A General Evaluation of the Historiography of the Köprülü Era (1656-1703).” Besides, M. Fatih Çalışır presented his paper on “Öskekli Şeyhî İbrahim Efendi (d. after 1686) and his work entitled Zeyl-i Vâkıʻa-nâme-i Veysî” and Ersin Kırca delivered his speech on “Letters of Amcazade Hüseyin Pasha.”
The 5th session titled "Contributions to the Biography of Köprülü" was moderated by IHU’s faculty member Prof. Suraiya Faroqhi. In this session, the following papers were presented “Köprülü Amcazade Hüseyin Pasha (1644-1702)” by Selim Hilmi Özkan, “Marriage Politics of the Köprülüler” by Mehmet Çağlar Öztürk, “Power Struggle Between Köprülü Family and Sultan II. Mustafa” by Tahir Sevinç, “A Köprülü Woman of Outstanding Substance: Ayşe Hanım and Her Means of Power” by Ayşegül Ünal and “The Early Career of Köprülü Mehmed Pasha” by Christopher Whitehead.
